Vermont once had more than 700 covered bridges but now 104, so they are very special to residents and are monitored by local towns and societies. Most of the bridges were built in the mid to late 19th century. The typical covered bridge is made with heavy timber trusses and the roof protects the timbers from the impact of weather which eventually would cause rot and deterioration. Many of the bridges span brooks and rivers and thus create a beautiful backdrop for a painting. The moments just after a heavy snowfall are quiet and pristine. and bring forth animals from their sheltered spots to resume foraging.
